Dart NeuroScience (DNS) merged with Helicon Therapeutics in 2007 and in 2012 purchased the former Nokia headquarters along scenic I-15 in northern San Diego. It decided to conduct a complete demolition of the internal core of the building and hired Wieland as its Construction Manager to renovate and add space for its new research labs.
Wieland worked with local trades to BIM-Model the entire building. It then proceeded to create natural light into the building by cutting clerestory openings at all floor levels, adding 20,000 SF, and constructing vivarium labs, biology labs, chemistry labs and 53,000 SF of general R & D and administrative space.
Wieland teamed with local San Diego architecture firm McFarlane Architects to convert the former office space into a state-of-the-art, biomedical research lab in the research-rich La Jolla lab corridor. In its final state, DNS now houses nearly 300 employees – mostly PhDs – seeking new therapies to maintain cognitive vitality.
